Frequently asked questions
The right Himalayan trek depends on your fitness level, trekking experience, altitude tolerance, terrain and trek duration. The Great Indian Trails classifies each trek by difficulty so you can understand the physical demands before booking. First-time trekkers can usually begin with easy or moderate treks, while difficult and high-altitude expeditions may require stronger fitness and previous trekking experience. Our team can also help you choose a trek that matches your experience and travel goals.
No, prior trekking experience is not required for every trek. Many easy and moderate Himalayan treks are suitable for first-time trekkers who have a reasonable level of fitness and prepare before departure. Difficult, technical or high-altitude treks may require previous trekking experience. The eligibility and fitness requirements for each expedition are mentioned on the individual trek page.
Items not included vary by trek, but typically include travel to and from the designated reporting point, personal expenses, personal trekking equipment, travel or adventure insurance, and expenses caused by unforeseen circumstances. Any route-specific exclusions are clearly listed on the individual trek page so you can review them before booking.
Group size varies depending on the trek, route, season and nature of the expedition. The Great Indian Trails focuses on thoughtfully sized groups rather than overcrowded departures, helping our trek leaders maintain better coordination, safety and a more personal experience in the mountains.
Yes. Solo travellers can join most of our scheduled group treks and are welcomed as part of the expedition group. Many trekkers travel independently, making group departures a convenient way to explore the Himalayas with experienced trek leaders and fellow travellers while retaining the freedom of solo travel.
Safety on high-altitude Himalayan treks is managed through appropriate acclimatisation, experienced trek leadership, route planning, participant monitoring and weather-based decision-making. Our itineraries are designed to allow the body to adjust to altitude wherever required. Trek leaders continuously assess weather, trail conditions and participant wellbeing, and safety takes priority over completing an itinerary exactly as planned.
Yes. The Great Indian Trails offers private and customised Himalayan treks and journeys based on your preferred dates, group size, fitness level, experience and travel style. Depending on the destination, we can customise elements such as the itinerary, pace, accommodation, transportation and additional experiences around the trek.
If weather or trail conditions make a Himalayan trek unsafe, the itinerary may be delayed, modified, rerouted or discontinued. Mountain weather can change quickly, particularly at higher altitudes, so our trek leaders make decisions based on actual conditions on the ground. Participant safety always takes priority over following the original itinerary.
Yes. In addition to scheduled departures, The Great Indian Trails organises family treks, private group treks and corporate trekking experiences. The route, difficulty, pace, itinerary and overall experience can be curated according to the group’s age profile, fitness level, objectives and preferred travel style.
For popular Himalayan treks and peak trekking seasons, we recommend booking several weeks to a few months in advance. Early booking gives you a better chance of securing your preferred departure date and provides enough time for physical preparation, travel planning, equipment arrangements and any permits or documentation required for the trek.
Yes. International travellers can book and join The Great Indian Trails expeditions in India. We provide route-specific information to help overseas travellers plan their journey, including reporting locations, local transportation, trekking permits and other practical requirements relevant to their expedition.
Yes. The Great Indian Trails provides guidance for trekking permits, local registrations, restricted-area requirements and route-specific documentation where applicable.
